But he stayed for the next 32 months. He would be evacuated out of the country once, smuggled across the Green Line, watch U.S. jets st shot down, wait 17 days to have a broken leg set, have a friend kidnapped and be caught in fire fights.

The first two months were quiet. He traveled with little fear in northern Lebanon. Then around Christmas, people -mostly Lebanese began disappearing. By February 1984, the Druse and and Shiite Moslems known as the Amal Militia defeated the Christians in West Beirut. Musselwhite, some teachers and 25 students got caught in the indiscriminate shelling.

They ran from the university to a professor's house and spent four days in the basem*nt. It was around the time of the shelling that Peter Kilburn, a university librarian, was kidnapped. He was evenutally murdered along with two British citizens last month in retaliation for the bombings in Libya. One of the Britons was a good friend of Musselwhite's. He and others were evacuated by helicopter to a boat off Beirut that same month and spent time in Cyprus, but soon returned to teach Promoted (From Page 1) assistant principal.

A nearly stationary low pressure system over Kansas sent showers and thundershowers into the central Plains and middle Mississippi Valley. That spring he watched the USS New Jersey firing its guns at suspected terrorist camps in villages in the hills outside Beirut. He says he couldn't see the ship off the shore of Beirut, but would see a big flash of yellow and then hear the shells flying overhead. He then left for the United States. Musselwhite returned in autumn 1984 and says the fighting wasn't as intense, but it still wasn't a stable situation. He rarely left campus without his Moslem friends. When the Amal forces weren't fighting the Christians, they were fighting among themselves. After escaping to East Beirut, Musselwhite taught at American University's extension school.

But living in the Christian section didn't mean he was safe. "We were literally dodging artillery shells," he says. Car bombs were as common as the sun rising. He once arrived four minutes after a car bomb went off in front of a crowded grocery store filled with women and children. perience, compared with her 16 years in Chillicothe schools.

He left again in August 1984 for a computer conference in Germany and returned a month later. He continued to teach in the Christian section until last summer, when university officials demanded the Americans cross the Green Line and teach at the university. Musselwhite and most of the American faculty said no and returned to the United States. There is a subplot to the story. Musselwhite, a decorated Korean War veteran, had to deal with war all over again.

"It was a personal battle I had to fight because after the Korean War, I became a pacifist. I said I would never deal with violence He felt helpless watching. He saw two American jets shot down over Lebanon by the Syrians. He saw one of the pilots being fished out of the sea. "It was very difficult to hear the sounds and hear the explosions and know what they do," he says.

"The explosions ripping things apart. You have to fight i the mental images." He still is fighting the mental images. He is trying to heal his mental wounds a year after leaving. She said this week she was the opposite. Both times, the decisions were against her. She has identified a pattern of discrimination, she said. After Kerney spoke, and the 70-plus in the audience gave her a standing ovation, several audience members spoke on behalf of Kerney. They included Sam Wade, NAACP local president; Judy Tanner, president of the Virginia Lee Black Educators Association; and a 14-year-old Mount Logan student whose mother works for Kerney.

The student praised Kerney's weekly radio program, and pleaded with the board to disregard race when making its decision. "It's not a racial issue," Nusbaum emphasized after the meeting. "The argument is, who is the most qualified," said Schwartz. "And people have a right to disagree with that," Nusbaum added.
