Terraria: How To Get The Drill Containment Unit Mount (2024)

Gathering resources and going on spelunking adventures is all part of the fun in Re-Logics 2D sandbox classic, Terraria. As players progress through the game, they will encounter a multitude of different tools, pickaxes and drills to aid them on their journey.

The Drill Containment Unit is an end-game post-Moon Lord mount that summons a flying drill with rapidly-firing lasers that eradicate any block in its path in mere seconds, making mining a breeze. As one of the best mounts in Terraria, here's how to make the Drill Containment Unit.

What Is The Drill Containment Unit?

Often nicknamed the DCU, the Drill Containment Unit is a unique late-game mount that summons a flying Drill Mount. It is the fastest way for players to mine, and all the player has to do is aim their lasers. It is the perfect method of achieving "Purify the World" when used in conjunction with the Clentaminator.

Unlike other Terraria mounts, the player cannot use any tools or weapons while using it, so players should be cautious. It also does not inflict damage upon other enemies like typical mining tools as pickaxes do. Material-wise, it is one of the most expensive items in the game, requiring 40 bars crafted from ores of different stages of in-game progression.

Gathering The Materials

To craft the Drill Containment Unit, players must gather Hellstone, Meteorite, Chlorophyte, Spectre, Shroomite and Luminite. It can be quite a time-consuming process, so here's where to find each material.

Hellstone

Out of all the necessary materials, the 40 required Hellstone bars are potentially the easiest to obtain, made out of Hellstone Ore and Obsidiansmelted at a Hellforge.Hellstone ore can be mined pre-Hardmode in The Underworld. Mining this ore requires a Nightmare or Deathbringer Pickaxe at a minimum, and cannot be mined with explosives. Hellstone usually is found below lava, so players should mine with caution or have the Lava Wader, or Terraspark Boots equipped to avoid taking burning damage.

Obsidian is formed when Water and Lava collide, creating blocks of Obsidian. It requires a pickaxe with 55% power to mine. Obsidian can easily be self-made by collecting buckets of lava and combining them with a water source. This task is made easier with the Bottomless Water Bucket and the Bottomless Lava Bucket, which produces infinite amounts of both liquids to avoid refilling.

Meteorite

Meteorite crash landings have a 50% chance of being triggered after the Brain of Cthulhu in a Crimson world or Eater of Worlds in a Corruption world has been defeated. A meteor landing will spawn with the chat status message: "A meteorite has landed!" The player will need to search their world for the exact site.

Meteorite crash zone is a mini-biome with a unique soundtrack, spawning Meteor Head enemies flying through the terrain. There will also be plenty of meteorite ore to gather, requiring a pickaxe with 50% power or greater to allow for faster gathering. This ore can be crafted into Meteorite bars at a Furnace, with three ores necessary to prepare one bar.

Chlorophyte

Chlorophyte is the first Hardmode material necessary for this extensive crafting recipe. Players will need a lot of it since it is also an essential component in making Shroomite and Spectre bars. At the beginning of Hardmode, Mud blocks in the Underground and Cavern layers of the Jungle biome may slowly convert into Chlorophyte Ore, requiring a pickaxe with at least 200% power. Chlorophyte Bars need six Chlorophyte Ore smelted at an Adamantite or Titanium Forge.

Chlorophyte can be frustrating to mine, as it generates slowly. When farming Chlorophyte Ore, players are advised to leave small clusters to grow into a renewable supply of the ore, and when gathering from large veins of Chlorophyte, they should leave behind one or two blocks of Chlorophyte so that it can regrow.

Spectre

Players must have defeated the fearsome flora boss Plantera before they can craft Spectre bars. Upon her defeat, new Hardmode enemies begin to spawn in the Dungeon, which drops Ectoplasm, the secondary ingredient for Spectre Bars. Players will need access to an Adamantite or Titanium Forge, needing two Chlorophyte Bars and one Ectoplasm to make two Spectre Bars.

When defeating any enemy in the post-Plantera dungeon, they have the potential to spawn a Dungeon Spirit, which will always drop one to two Ectoplasm. The best way to farm Ectoplasm is to place Water Candles in the surrounding areas to increase enemy spawn rates.

Shroomite

Shroomite Bars require one Chlorophyte Bar and 15 Glowing Mushrooms using the Autohammer crafting station, purchased from the Truffle NPC for one platinum coin after defeating Plantera. Players can farm Glowing Mushrooms in naturally occurring Glowing Mushroom biomes or self-made ones.

Glowing Mushroom biomes can be made by converting Jungle Biomes into Glowing Mushrooms using the Clentaminator with the Dark Blue solution. The player will need 600 Glowing Mushrooms in total, which might be the most arduous task of waiting for their regrowth.

Luminite

Luminite is the hardest material to obtain in all of Terraria, being exclusively dropped by the end-game boss, The Moon Lord, who is a challenge even for the most experienced players. When defeated, The Moon Lord will drop Luminite in stacks of 70-90. The player may need to kill him at least twice to obtain all the necessary Luminite (160 Luminite, to be precise) to smelt into bars.

Luminite ore can be smelted into bars for crafting at the Ancient Manipulator crafting station. This is a guaranteed drop from the Lunatic Cultist boss, the prelude before the Lunar Events and The Moon Lord fight.

Once the player has gathered all the necessary materials, they can finally craft their Drill Containment Unit at either a Mythril or Orichalcum Anvil. Those materials are, in total:

  • 40x Hellstone Bars
  • 40x Meteorite Bars
  • 40x Chlorophyte Bars
  • 40x Spectre Bars
  • 40x Shroomite Bars
  • 40x Luminite Bars

Now they can summon their Drill mount and mine to their heart's content!

Terraria is available to play on PC, PS3, PS4, PS5, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, iOS and Android devices.
