However, mods can be very finicky so you need to be careful when installing them and make sure it’s done correctly. If you do so, you’ll be able to enjoy everything that the creator intended.

9 Item Tips

Aside from all the puns and wordplay, one of the game’s most defining characteristics is its sheer volume of items. There are so many collectibles in the Gungeon that their variety rivals that of The Binding Of Isaac. In the same vein, most if not all of the items you collect during gameplay tell you very little about it.

Sometimes the name and brief description are enough to figure it out, but other items are more subtle in their effects. If you’d like to get full descriptions of the collectibles and their effects then just install this mod by scionofmemory.

8 Some Bunny’s Content Pack

A shared aspect among roguelike and roguelite games is the huge amount of items they offer. The Gungeon already has a massive gallery, but many modders have taken it upon themselves to add more.

A modder named Some Bunny created a content pack that adds not only more items but also more guns, shrines, and NPCs. It’s one of the larger and more diverse mods available to download. It also includes several artifacts which change how runs go, a mechanic inspired by the Risk Of Rain series.

7 The Lich

Since the A Farewell to Arms update, the Lich has become one of the faces of the Gungeon. Appearing as a skeletal gunslinger with dual revolvers, a black hat, and a long black trench coat, the Lich is a challenging boss encountered in the Bullet Hell area. However, thanks to modding, you can see this character in a different light.

By installing The Lich mod by rabana, you can actually play as the Lich in Gungeoneer form. He comes with his own unique weapon and items which offer unique gameplay. In addition, two new synergies become available for the items Lich’s Eye Bullets and Magnum.

6 Expand The Gungeon

Another popular addition to games whether they be DLC or mods is expansion. Base games can thrive for years as long as new content to experience keeps getting introduced. The Gungeon is a colorful and dynamic world to which people have sought to add more. The modder Apache Thunder created this mod that adds some new items and most importantly three new floors.

These floors are the Jungle, the Belly, and the Old West. While two of them are self-explanatory, the Belly has fleshy look to it and it the alternative to the Abbey of the True Gun floor. It also features its own custom boss, the Interdimensional Horror.

5 Realms Of Ruin: The Dark Temple

In order to keep gameplay fresh and exciting, new challenges need to be introduced. This can come in the form of adding new enemies, bosses, hazardous areas, or challenges themselves. This mod by bl4ck_hunter adds several mechanics to test your skills in the Gungeon.

The first asks you to complete a series of tasks in order to unlock the Dark Temple which you can challenge for rewards. Second, it adds the Heartless which is an NPC that can remove heart pickups to make runs more difficult. Lastly, it allows you to thin out the hoard of collectibles by using the ban_items command.

4 Knife To A Gunfight

With new mods and updates, it’s becoming more and more difficult to catalog everything you can find and meet in the Gungeon. Many creators focus on adding more to the universe simply to raise the RNG and keep every run as different as possible.

The modder Skilotar_ created this mod to do just that. It adds in a long list of passive and active items as well as some new guns to fire. Most notable is that it also includes two new Gungeoneers to play: Roll1n, a close-range high-mobility character, and the Skater who uses “coolness” as currency and to boost stats.

3 Once More Into The Breach

Enter The Gungeon: The 9 Best Mods, Ranked (7)

The Breach is the hub area of the Gungeon where you’ll start before each run. There’s a fair amount to do in this area from selecting your character to unlocking items. As such, there are many mods that alter the properties of the Breach and the Gungeon. In this mod by Nevernamed, the Breach gains a new Gungeoneer and NPC while the Gungeon gets many more items and guns.

The new NPC is the Jammomaster and talking to him will activate the All-Jammed mode which makes enemies and bosses faster and stronger. The new Gungeoneer is the Shade who is limited to one heart but starts with piercing ammo and is immune to status effects.

2 Planetside Of Gunymede

This is another mod created by Some Bunny that focuses on more than just items. It’s labeled as an expansion-based mod with the purpose of expanding the Gungeon’s universe. In addition to all the new items, guns, shrines, and synergies it has, it includes new debuffs such as Frailty and Heat Stroke to inflict on your opponents.

1 Frost And Gunfire

Enter The Gungeon: The 9 Best Mods, Ranked (9)

There are many expansions named after prime elemental forces and for good reason. Having element-focused content creates a certain feel and expectation which can capture attention. In terms of adding fire and ice to the Gungeon, there’s this mod by Neighborino. It’s a very diverse add-on that covers multiple aspects of the game.

It adds over 55 new items and weapons to collect with related synergies. It also includes new shrines, NPCs, enemy types, and a new boss for you to encounter. In terms of gameplay, it comes with a new game modifier, over 250 new rooms to explore, and new unlockables to achieve. The icing on top is that you can do all this with the new custom character, the Wanderer.
