7 The Lich

Since the A Farewell to Arms update, the Lich has become one of the faces of the Gungeon. Appearing as a skeletal gunslinger with dual revolvers, a black hat, and a long black trench coat, the Lich is a challenging boss encountered in the Bullet Hell area. However, thanks to modding, you can see this character in a different light.

6 Expand The Gungeon

Another popular addition to games whether they be DLC or mods is expansion. Base games can thrive for years as long as new content to experience keeps getting introduced. The Gungeon is a colorful and dynamic world to which people have sought to add more. The modder Apache Thunder created this mod that adds some new items and most importantly three new floors.

4 Knife To A Gunfight

With new mods and updates, it’s becoming more and more difficult to catalog everything you can find and meet in the Gungeon. Many creators focus on adding more to the universe simply to raise the RNG and keep every run as different as possible.

The modder Skilotar_ created this mod to do just that. It adds in a long list of passive and active items as well as some new guns to fire. Most notable is that it also includes two new Gungeoneers to play: Roll1n, a close-range high-mobility character, and the Skater who uses “coolness” as currency and to boost stats.

3 Once More Into The Breach

The Breach is the hub area of the Gungeon where you’ll start before each run. There’s a fair amount to do in this area from selecting your character to unlocking items. As such, there are many mods that alter the properties of the Breach and the Gungeon. In this mod by Nevernamed, the Breach gains a new Gungeoneer and NPC while the Gungeon gets many more items and guns.

The new NPC is the Jammomaster and talking to him will activate the All-Jammed mode which makes enemies and bosses faster and stronger. The new Gungeoneer is the Shade who is limited to one heart but starts with piercing ammo and is immune to status effects.

2 Planetside Of Gunymede

This is another mod created by Some Bunny that focuses on more than just items. It’s labeled as an expansion-based mod with the purpose of expanding the Gungeon’s universe. In addition to all the new items, guns, shrines, and synergies it has, it includes new debuffs such as Frailty and Heat Stroke to inflict on your opponents.

It also populates the Gungeon floors with 7 new enemy types that all share a mythical theme. Finally, there are new special enemies and minibosses to encounter on the various floors.

1 Frost And Gunfire

There are many expansions named after prime elemental forces and for good reason. Having element-focused content creates a certain feel and expectation which can capture attention. In terms of adding fire and ice to the Gungeon, there’s this mod by Neighborino. It’s a very diverse add-on that covers multiple aspects of the game.

It adds over 55 new items and weapons to collect with related synergies. It also includes new shrines, NPCs, enemy types, and a new boss for you to encounter. In terms of gameplay, it comes with a new game modifier, over 250 new rooms to explore, and new unlockables to achieve. The icing on top is that you can do all this with the new custom character, the Wanderer.
